Key quotes and takeaways from the show:

The mechanisms of ageing and chronic illness are closely related. Similar therapies can help with both.

There is an overall human diet that has developed naturally. Within that human diet there are variations.

Just like exercise variation, diet variation (timing, food types, amounts, etc.) aids growth, change, adaptation and overall health. A little adversity is good.

Scurvy is when you don’t get enough vitamin C.

Hypoxia is when you don’t get enough oxygen.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Chambers push more oxygen into blood plasma by increasing pressure. Your red blood cells can be almost 100% saturated with oxygen but your body can still absorb more (in blood plasma).

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy increases energy and improves bodily repair and healing.

Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy is used for TBI, concussion, MS, autism, post-stroke and adjunctively with cancer treatments.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy isn’t a treatment on its own. It allows the body to treat itself by opening avenues to stimulate a healing response. It should be used in combination with other treatments; for example, red light therapy, physiotherapy, diet, etc.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy can be used to improve performance: (1) more oxygen to cells (more energy), and (2) more effective recovery.

In sporting performance, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a legal way of getting more oxygen to cells without impacting on red blood cells (this is the main goal of illegal blood doping by increasing red blood cell count).

Red Light Therapy stimulates mitochondria (increases energy) and reduces inflammation.

Heat Therapy can help with detoxification and shifting metabolism. It can also be combined with red light (infrared saunas) for added benefits.

The initial phase of inflammation in an injured area of the body can be great to initiate the healing process; however, some injuries get “stuck” in the inflammatory phase and scar tissue develops to stabilise the area, hindering recovery.

All of these tools (heat, cold, infrared and hyperbaric oxygen therapy) are neither good nor bad. You have to apply them at the right time and in the right way.

Hormesis is where you put the body under certain stress to stimulate beneficial effects; for example, exercise. The type, amount and intensity of hormetic stimuli should be suitable for the desired benefit, not too much nor too little.

Cancer cells have very specific needs to function. If we try to make them function in a different way, they often die.

To be healthy and live longer lives, we need to have a body that’s capable of adapting.

Most of these therapies can be replicated naturally – breathing techniques, sunlight, exercise, hot baths, cold showers, etc.

Travelling with children and homeschooling creates very adaptable young adults.

Stats from Dr. Sonners during the show: 82%-85% of children on the autistic spectrum have some brain inflammation. 72%-74% of children on the autistic spectrum have gut imbalances. 75%-80% of children on the autistic spectrum have some form of mitochondrial dysfunction. Around 77% of children on the autistic spectrum have hypoperfusion to the temporal lobes of the brain (low blood flow/oxygen to communication/language centres of the brain).  The therapies discussed in this podcast can help treat these conditions.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy has many different alternatives – high pressure, low pressure, different amounts of oxygen, etc. – it’s important that the treatment is correctly applied to each specific patient’s goals.

The plant analogy – A plant needs a range of things (sun, water, soil, etc.), over a period of time, to become healthy. The same is true of a human.

We have a huge role to play in epigenetics (behaviours and environments that affect the way our genes work), we have no room to play in genetics.

The epigenetics of a male (sperm cell) are extremely important when it comes to fertility. Don’t just focus on the woman when trying for a baby!

“Never get lost thinking that whatever you’re expressing, health-wise, is the end of your story.” Even if you think your health is great, you still need to maintain, prepare, prevent, etc.

“If the body created it, the body can heal it. And if it created it, there are a certain set of circumstances that allowed it to exist, and there’s a certain remedy out there.” Never give up, it’s just a matter of time before you find the right pieces.
